From ‘Con club’ to ‘Com hub’, great for Tod!
Posted by Cate On 06 Mar 2010 At 11:48:18
If there’s one thing you can say for our wonderful town, despite the best efforts of developers to eradicate our history we still have some wonderful historic buildings! Many of which date back to the Fielden family in the 1800s.

There’s the Grade One Listed Town Hall and Unitarian Church, and the Grade Two Listed Dobroyd Castle. And news has been released that another piece of the town’s heritage looks to have been saved from possibly becoming more expensive flats.

What until recently was the Conservative Club on Fielden Square appears destined for full and active use for the whole community as a ‘hub’ for community groups to work out of. That building, built by the Fieldens again, began life back in the 1800s as the town’s ‘Temperance Hotel’, which meant no alcohol could be drunk there.

This from an article in this week’s Todmorden News:

quote:
Louise said the support for all the work that Todmorden Together does from elected members of the council makes a big difference but she reiterated the organisation's neutrality and said it was not a political football.

And the organisation's work, from Kidsfest to offering support to nearly 40 groups in the town, is gaining recognition from people outside Todmorden with people ringing up from far and wide to hear about their projects.

"When they ring up from Liverpool or London and find out how small Todmorden Together is they can't quite believe it.

"But it's the hard work of people like Salma Parveen, who started as a volunteer and now works for us part-time, and Abby Fairbank, who volunteers here as well as studying for her degree, that makes it work," added Louise.

Todmorden Together is planning a move into the former Conservative club on Rochdale Road and hopes to create a community resource centre with a number of different organisations all under the same roof.

Some may say this is a total waste of ‘our’ money, but no details of funding have been publicised yet it still being ‘early days’ for the project, and it is quite possible that funding will come from things such as the National Lottery. Just one ‘funding stream’ from which Todmorden has received very little despite putting hundreds of thousands of pounds into the pot over the years!

The community and voluntary sector in the town already do great works for the town and its people, and anything that can help it work better and more effectively is to me great news

Sue's Law: you never know what your future holds!
Posted by Cate On 26 Feb 2010 At 19:54:12
I received the following message today:
quote:
Sue's Law: 'Love is stronger than blood'

If you were deemed to be too frail or unwell to make decisions for yourself, would you want your nearest and dearest to make the decisions for you? Would you want the person or people who know you best to ensure that your wishes are carried out? And if you are not in a legally recognised relationship, do you expect to be able to decide for yourself now exactly WHO your nearest and dearest are?

Please read http://www.regard.org.uk/SuesLaw.htm and sign the petition at
http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/SuesLaw/
Reading Sue's story and suffering from Multiple Sclerosis (MS) myself I signed the petition straight away. Hopefully, I still have many many more years of reasonably active life still to come, I've loads still to give, but who knows what the future holds?

I hope anyone reading this keeps fit and healthy and lives to a 'ripe old age', surrounded by a loving and caring family, but you never know.

Please sign the petition
Thank you
Worth a visit? The People's History Museum
Posted by Cate On 26 Feb 2010 At 18:53:18
This from the BBC:

The People's History Museum in Manchester has re-opened its doors after a £12.5m refit - offering a unique look at the origins of British democracy, and how working men and women were given the right to vote.
Audio slideshow here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8530782.stm

People's history website here:
http://www.phm.org.uk/

It looks close-ish to Manchester Victoria and to me the struggle for democratic rights is something we should never forget!
