Famous Todmordians
SIR JOHN COCKCROFT (1897 - 1967)
Eldest son of a Todmorden textile family he split the atom. Went to Todmorden Secondary School then Manchester Uni, until interrupted by the First World War. First achieved fame when, working with a Mr. Walton, he succeeded in splitting the atomic nuclei, working on a machine patched with plasticene.
In 1944 he was got a CBE, and became a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1948 before winning the Nobel Prize for Physics along with Prof Walton, in 1951. Given the honorary freedom of Todmorden in 1946.
ALAN GODFREY - abducted by aliens.
DAVID CHAYTOR - Ex Todmorden Town Councillor, famous for leading a campaign against sleaze in Pot Noodle advertising.
WILLIAM HOLT (1897-1977) - Adventurer, author, artist & eccentric.
Known for his partnership with Trigger, a white horse bought from a rag-and-bone man in 1956. In 1964 Aged 65, ( Trigger was 10yrs) the duo made a 9,000 mile trek across Europe.
Eldest son of a coal merchant, he was born in Joshua Street, Todmorden. At the start of WW1, volunteered for the Lancashire Fusiliers despite being under age.
Returned to Todmorden after the war, did not settle, & frequently travelled abroad.
became involved in social issues & in 1932 was jailed for 9 months for taking part in a protest march against the Means Test.
Wrote his memoirs which he sold himself door to door. Did some work for the BBC. During the Spanish Civil War he worked as a correspondent.
JOHN KETTLEY - TV weatherman who got the sack for going bald. he had a go at Playing Cricket for Todmorden. Quote: "It was the only Yorkshire team in the Lancashire league, that's probably why some people think I'm a Lancashireman."
JOHN FIELDEN - Built the castle to show off to his girlfreind. Got the 10 hour act through Parliament, but it was repealed by Mrs. Thatcher. His statue wanders round Todmorden.
SIR GEOFFREY WILKINSON - born in Todmorden, one of the greatest inorganic chemists, did transition metal chemistry, homogeneous catalysis, organometallic chemistry, and coordination chemistry. Got half a Nobel Prize In 1973.

WILLIAM MITCHELL - Preacher, from Todmorden was connected with 'The Church of Christ in Rossendale', forerunners of the Baptists. In 1685, he was jailed for his sermons, released in 1689, when the Act of Toleration allowed him and colleagues to preach in their own meeting house.

JOHN HELLIWELL - Musician. Plays saxaphone for Supertramp & sold millions of records.
KIETH EMERSON - Musician. Born Todmorden 2nd Nov. 1944. His name makes the anagrams - Hi, teen smoker- Sit, meek heron - Stone me, hiker! - & - see Homer knit.
GEOFF LOVE - b. 4 September 1917, in Todmorden, musical director, arranger, composer, one of the UK's most popular easy-listening music personalities.
JOHNATHAN RYLAND - Dr. Rylands son, plays "The bloke who hits people with a giant chewing gum packet in the Orbit adverts", & a character in the T.V. Series 'Fat Freinds'
CLARA LAW - Murdered in Dale Street Co-op in 1891. Refuses to be forgotten.
P.C. EMPSALL - Recently appeared on TV kicking 27 yr old Mr Wilson in the groin area and punching him in the face three times. Was found guilty of assault. He used to work with P.C. Godfrey, the Todmorden flying saucer Policeman.
PETER LEVER - Cricketer. Born in Todmorden 17th September 1940
ROBERT SHACKLETON (1919-1986) - leading authority on Montesquieu, the French philospher, Fellow and then Dean of Brasenose College and, for three years from 1966, librarian of the Bodleian Library at Oxford.
WILL ASHWORTH (1920-1991), author of Economic History of England, and the first professor (at Bristol University) in Economic and Social History.
RICHARD HORSFALL (1920-81). Essex (then Glamorgan) in the 1948 side that scored 721 runs in a day against Australia, led at the time by Bradman.
HAROLD DAWSON (1914-1994). Played for Hampshire alongside another Todmordian, Derek Shackleton.

John Helliwell - is he famous? was born in Tod, and played/plays ? saxaphone and keyboards for Supertramp, do you know any more Dabs ? does he still play, does he still live here ? Does he shop at Safeways ?

PJ Proby was Born James Marcus Smith on November 6th, 1938 at Herman Hospital in Houston, Texas, Thats all I can find as yet.
I did meet him in a back alley in hebdenbridge, clutching a bottle of beer and wobbling about a bit. He seemed a nice chap, but what is the Todmorden connection?
Geoff Love, all I can find on the net about him is sites selling vintage vinyl, again, what's the Tod connection?
Kieth Emersons oficcial website autobiography sectionhttp://www.keithemerson.com/autobio.html tells he took a fox for a ride in his car, then the fox bit his finger and escaped, no mention of Todmorden. Any links?
The one about Dr,Rylands son sounds OK Bro, do you knowwhat his name is ?

bit of a crazy suggestion but how about this, goto google and type "geoff love todmorden" then you could try the same for keith "keith emerson todmorden" bit of a stab in the dark i know, hope it helps
